Tabaaruk Museum of Artistic Expression
Envision Tabaaruk Museum as more than a repository of artifacts—it’s an invitation to partake in a living legacy and interrogate memory. The term, Tabaaruk, ideally, signifies appropriation, borrowing, a gesture of evoking blessings, or participating in something sacred. Born from a serendipitous conversation between the museum’s curator and taarab musician Mbaruk Ali of Lelele Afrika Band, encapsulates the very essence of Swahili artistic evolution. Mbaruk elucidated the phenomenon of musical kinship as “kutukua hiki na kutia pale”—taking (something) from here and placing it there—a testament to the shared heritage and creative interplay that defines the Swahili Coast.
Tabaaruk Museum traces the captivating history and evolution of music and artistic expression along the Swahili Coast through time and space. These narratives come to life within the museum’s digital walls and through dynamic, intergenerational artistic encounters aimed at giving the museum a certain texture, something one can hold, own and preserve. These interactions cultivate a unique alchemy, blending tradition with contemporary expression in a hybrid approach that celebrates the rich artistry of the Swahili coast.
